The Parable of the Sower: The Soil of the Heart
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the parable of the sower to reveal a profound truth to us: the Word of God is a living seed, always fruitful, but its harvest depends on the soil that receives it. The sower goes out to sow abundantly, without calculating, without selecting: God never tires of offering His grace to every person.
The four soils represent the dispositions of our hearts. There is the hardened path, where the evil one immediately steals the Word; the rocky ground, where initial enthusiasm does not withstand trial; the thorns, where worries, riches, and pleasures choke the seed. But there is also the good soil: the one who hears with a generous heart and holds fast to the Word with perseverance bears fruit.
This parable is not a judgment, but an invitation to conversion. How many times do the path, the rocks, and the thorns coexist within our own hearts? Lent and every day of the Christian life are a time to till the soil: prayer, silence, the sacraments, and charity make our souls fertile ground.
Let us ask the Lord for the grace to be "good soil": not perfect, but available; not superficial, but rooted in Him. For the fruit does not depend on our own strength, but on the faithfulness with which we guard His Word, letting it grow with patience to maturity.
