The Gift the World Cannot Give
In this passage, spoken just before His Passion, Jesus offers His disciples a gift that seems almost impossible: peace in the face of chaos. He doesn’t say, “I will remove your trials.” He says, “My peace I give to you.”
What is the difference between the world’s peace and Christ’s peace? The world’s peace is the absence of conflict, a fragile truce based on circumstances being safe, comfortable, and under control. But Christ’s peace is the presence of trust. It is the calm that allows a soul to remain anchored in God even when everything around it is sinking.
Notice that Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” This implies a choice. Peace is not a feeling we wait for; it is a decision we make, rooted in faith. How? By believing what Jesus says next: “The Father is greater than I” (in His humanity, He points to the Father’s perfect will), and “The ruler of this world is coming, but he has no power over me.”
Satan’s lie is that our circumstances have the final word. Christ’s truth is that the Cross, and the obedience of love, has already won.
Take this into your day: When anxiety rises, pause. Place your hand on your heart and whisper, “Lord, You have not left me orphaned. You have left me Your peace.” That peace is not a distant hope. It is a person: Jesus Christ, who says, “I am going away, but I am coming to you.”
Let no fear today convince you otherwise.
