The World Will Hate You
In this passage from the Last Supper discourse, Jesus strips away any illusion that following Him will lead to popularity or worldly comfort. He speaks not of a kingdom of earthly power, but of a truth that challenges the “world”, the system of values opposed to God.
Why does the world hate? Because it loves its own darkness (John 3:19). When a Christian lives the Beatitudes, choosing purity, honesty, mercy, and forgiveness, it implicitly condemns the world’s greed, lust, pride, and revenge. The world feels exposed, and its response is rejection.
Christ calls this “hatred” a badge of identity: “you are not of the world.” For the Catholic, this is a sobering reminder. If we never experience any friction or mockery for our faith, if we blend in completely, we must ask ourselves: have we diluted the Gospel? To be chosen out of the world means we will often stand alone.
Yet this is not a call to fear or bitterness. It is a call to fidelity. Jesus says, “Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’” If they persecuted the perfect Master, can His flawed servants expect a different welcome? No. Our rejection is a participation in His own Passion.
Therefore, when we face ridicule for Church teaching, or are excluded for our prayers, let us not be shocked. Rather, let us see it as a strange mercy: a sign we belong to Him. Pray for the strength not to retaliate, but to love anyway, for the world hated Him first, and He died for it anyway.
Lord Jesus, when the world’s favor fades and rejection stings, help me to stand firm. Remind me that I am chosen, not for comfort, but for truth. Let me wear the cross of being disliked as a share in Your glory. Amen.
