The Advocate’s Loving Indictment
In John 16:5-11, Jesus speaks of His departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The disciples are consumed with sorrow, but Our Lord redirects their focus to a divine necessity: “It is better for you that I go.”
Why? Because the Ascension clears the way for the Advocate. The Spirit’s first act is to convict the world “concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” This is a tender mercy, not a harsh accusation.
Concerning sin: The world’s fundamental sin is refusing to believe in Jesus. The Spirit reveals our need for a Savior, not merely our moral failings.
Concerning righteousness: Jesus returns to the Father, proving that His sacrifice was accepted. Our own righteousness is worthless; only Christ’s, which He shares with us, saves.
Concerning judgment: The ruler of this world (Satan) is already condemned. The Spirit frees us from fearing the world’s judgment, because the decisive battle is won.
This conviction is a gift. It shatters our complacency so that grace can enter. Rather than flee from the Spirit’s probing light, we can welcome it as the beginning of true freedom. For the Advocate comes not to crush us, but to lead us gently from the darkness of self-reliance into the bright truth of total dependence on Christ.
